Putting the Macedonian Modernist Poet, Aco Šhopov, into English
The Canadian Macedonian Heritage Society, in partnership with the Literaturno Društvo “Brakja Miladinovci,” hosted a memorable literary event celebrating the work of Aco Šopov and the launch of the bilingual Macedonian-English edition of his poetry collection The Long Coming of the Fire. Held at St. Clement of Ohrid Orthodox Cathedral in Toronto, the gathering brought together members of the community, scholars, and poetry enthusiasts for an afternoon dedicated to Macedonian literary heritage and cultural expression.
The evening was warmly introduced by event organizers, who emphasized the importance of Šopov’s legacy and his enduring relevance to Macedonian identity and literature. The program featured distinguished speakers Christina Kramer, Professor Emerita at the University of Toronto, and Rawley Grau, an award-winning translator. Together, they shared insights into their three-year journey translating Šopov’s complex and evocative poetry into English, describing the process as both challenging and deeply enriching.
Kramer and Grau highlighted the linguistic, cultural, and emotional depth embedded in Šopov’s work, offering reflections on the responsibility of preserving poetic meaning across languages. Their presentation was followed by a bilingual reading of selected poems, allowing the audience to experience the original Macedonian alongside its English translation. This dual-language format not only showcased the beauty of the Macedonian language but also made Šopov’s work accessible to a broader audience.
The event concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, where attendees deepened their understanding of both the poet and the translation process. Guests were also invited to purchase copies of the book and connect with the translators, further fostering a sense of community and shared cultural appreciation.
Overall, the event was a powerful tribute to Aco Šopov, successfully bridging linguistic and cultural boundaries while celebrating the richness of Macedonian literary tradition.
