Meet Makedonski Brod.
A grounded introduction to the city, its landscape, people, history and wider municipality.
Makedonski Brod stands on the upper Treska River and serves as the administrative centre of Poreche, one of North Macedonia's most sparsely populated mountain regions. The municipality covers 888.97 square kilometres but had only 5,889 residents in 2021.
The town's name refers to a ford, recalling the river crossing on the old route between Kichevo and Prilep. Forested massifs, limestone gorges and karst caves surround the long valley, with Peshna Cave the best-known natural landmark.
Poreche contains prehistoric, ancient and medieval sites, including fortification remains at Devini Kuli and masonry around Peshna. Oral traditions link these ruins to King Marko's sisters, but the legends should be separated from documented archaeology.
Twentieth-century schools, municipal institutions and small industries consolidated the town's regional role. Kozjak reservoir later interrupted the direct road toward Skopje, reinforcing the area's remoteness while creating a dramatic new lake landscape.

Geography
Geography
Land shapes the city.
Terrain, waterways, climate and transport explain why Makedonski Brod grew where it did.
Makedonski Brod stands on the upper Treska River in the Poreche region of central-western North Macedonia. Mountain massifs—Suva Gora, Dautica, Karadžica and branches of the Jakupica system—enclose the long river basin. The town is small, but it is the administrative and service centre for dozens of villages scattered through a very large, sparsely populated municipality.
The name Brod refers to a ford, a shallow crossing that once carried the route between Kichevo and Prilep over the Treska. The river remains the landscape's organizing feature, flowing north toward the Kozjak reservoir. Limestone gorges and caves mark the surrounding country; Pešna, with its monumental entrance, is the best known, while the Slatinski Izvor cave system lies elsewhere in the municipality.
History
History
A concise, rewritten account.
Written afresh from cross-checked municipal, archaeological, heritage and institutional sources—not copied website text.
Poreche has been inhabited since prehistory, as its caves, hilltop sites and scattered archaeological finds show. Medieval fortifications controlled movement through the Treska valley. At Pešna, masonry remains inside and around the cave are traditionally linked with the nearby complex called Devini Kuli, though legends connecting them to King Marko's sisters should be read as folklore rather than documented biography.
The river crossing gave Brod its name and practical role. For centuries the surrounding villages relied on farming, forestry, stock raising and seasonal migration, while the small settlement by the ford served as their exchange point. Under Ottoman and later Yugoslav administrations it gradually acquired local institutions, but the town's substantial administrative growth belongs mainly to the twentieth century.
After the Second World War, schools, municipal offices, housing and small industries consolidated Makedonski Brod as the centre of Poreche. The creation of Kozjak reservoir altered older routes down the Treska and reinforced the region's sense of remoteness. That isolation has also protected extensive forests, river canyons and cave landscapes that now form the municipality's strongest opportunity for careful nature and heritage tourism.
The preserved legacy narrative
Open the preserved legacy narrative
On the site of the present-day town there was once a bridge on the route connecting Prilep and Kichevo; the crossing gave the town its name. A funerary inscription found in the village of Krapa indicates a Roman presence in the area. Later, after Slavic groups reached the Balkan Peninsula, the Berziti, also known as the Brsjaci, settled here.
Near Makedonski Brod, by the village of Devich, visible remains of buildings show that a medieval town or settlement once stood in this area and served as a centre for the wider region.
