Macedonia Secrets
Македонски тајни
A mother-and-son bakery in Newmarket that CBC's food columnist Suresh Doss singled out as the place to taste Macedonian home baking in the Toronto region. Maggie and Louie Georgievski emigrated from Strumica; their son Nicholas, born in Richmond Hill, grew up in the kitchen and now works the ovens beside them.
The counter carries pastrmajlija topped with marinated pork and hot peppers, zelnik folded with leek and onion, gourabi walnut shortbread and baklava, alongside pizzas and pide — everything made by hand in a deliberately plain room. The society has not confirmed current opening hours; call ahead before visiting.
